Dame Rangimarie Hetet DBE was a New Zealand Maori tohunga raranga. She identified with the Ngati Maniapoto iwi. Hetet was born in Oparure, King Country, New Zealand on 24 May 1892, she was the most renowned Maori weaver of last century. Her radical approach to teaching weaving in the 1950s helped revitalise an art form in serious decline.
Interesting note: Another noted Maori weaver: Erenora Puketapu was married to master carver Rangi Hetet, who was the grandson of renowned traditional weaver Rangimarie Hetet. Puketapu-Hetet learned cloak-weaving from Rangimarie, and passed on her knowledge to her children and many others through books and weaving workshops.
