Colin Castleton, when the story opens, has one interest in life-bringing down Germans, as a person retribution. The tale proceeds to tell of the events which induced this state of mind, and how, eventually, a happy climax clears the bitterness from his mind. Colin had given his fiance, Daphen Hazeltyn, a puppy, which was flying with him as a mascot, when his machine was brought down over occupied territory. When making his way to the coast and England, he buries the locket Daphne had given him, and arranges to leave Lassie, the dog, with a Belgian farmer.
