The Coromandel Collection is a portfolio of landscapes and countryside vignettes from Da'Vella Gore, an artist in oils who regularly makes painting safaris from her summer home in Whitianga. In this book Da'Vella invites readers to join her on a typical three-month wander round Coromandel's pohutukawa-fringed coast. Occasionally she detours into quiet river valleys; now and again she traverses the bush-covered ranges which forms the Peninsula's backbone. Sandy white beaches and rocky small coves are visited, clay cliffs climbed and kauri forests tramped through. At heart a conservationist, Da'Vella finds inspiration in the timeless landscape rather than areas where man's hand is obvious. However, old timber mills and dam sites, derelict gold mines and abandoned pioneer huts frequently attract her into setting up her easel. This Artist's selection of twenty-eight favourite views is made even more personal by her whimsical commentary. With delightful humour and an artist's eye for the unusual or unexpected, she describes the (sometimes trying) circumstances in which she produces each painting, or reminisces about earlier gypsy adventures in her caravan tours of the remote areas she so loves to paint.
